Nice, Always nice to add to the stash.

I have been busy doing the same myself.

How heavy is the SKS? My SKS is a norinco paratrooper and is REALLY heavy.

It's lighter than my RPK by a few pounds. I'd say about 7-lbs with an empty mag ?
The trick is the stock which is very, very lightweight. On your paratrooper, you might consider swapping the wood for lighter composites to shed weight.

It is a green plastic stock, but it is as heavy as I'll get out, maybe 10lb's or more for the whole gun. I'll have to look at finding a lightweight stock.

Nice for bench shooting, it seems almost 2x as heavy as my AK.

Hows that Yugo cycle with that mag? I'm thinking about streamlining my M59 w/ a tapco stock and seeing if I can find some 20 rndr detachable mags... in my opinion the 30rnders are too long for firing prone...

nice boom sticks man

Hey Dragon: very nice additions. I don't have a lot of luck using stripper clips on the large SKS mags but maybe it's technique. Looks like a Romanian drum on your RPK. Change that puppy out for a Norinco. Much faster and easier loading.

Parts...

If you know this stuff... just skip this post

Without getting nausiously long winded.... depends on what his rifle's imported parts to US made parts is.... its the 10 or less game...
and it looks to me (without fieldstripping the rifle)
stock, handguard, and mag is all I see

from: http://www.victorinc.com/SKS-FAQ.html#_Toc167103936

How many imported parts can be replaced in an SKS Carbine?

Using commercially available parts, you can replace the following parts:

1) Replace the stock with aftermarket US-made version.

2) Replace the handguard with aftermarket US-made version.

3) Replace the gas piston with a US-made version from Tapco (#SKS6602), SKSMan or SKSParts (#SKS-034).

4) Replace the magazine with a 100% US-made magazine, including the magazine body, follower and floorplate. (Replaces two imported parts.)

5) On Yugoslavian Type 59/66 Carbines: Remove the grenade launcher and replace it with a US-made muzzle break (foreign muzzle attachments are counted). See the FAQs on removing the Yugoslavian Type M59/66 grenade launcher for more info.

On a typical SKS Carbine, you will need to replace four parts. On Yugoslavian Type 59/66 Rifle, you will need to replace five parts.

These US-made parts are sometimes known as compliance parts, since they are used to ensure that the resulting rifle is compliant with Title 18 USC 922(r).

but that's such an asinine game.... :banghead:If the JBT's want ya... they don't need some stupid crap like that to hang ya.... They can just trump something up

a fellow oughtta be able to do as he see's fit w/ his rifle.... :applause_

and some do:wink:

STUPID QUESTION APPROACHING

If you store your magazines loaded with rounds, will that weaken the springs in the magazine to the point where you would have feeding troubles?

Just a thought.

put 18 rds in your 20 rd mags, likewise 28 in 30. Mil springs should be ok.

or if you're really worried about it- keep your ammo on stripper clips.

load em 10 at a time if it gives you piece of mind on mag reliability:D

However, my RPK has and it's Fvckin' awesome !!! ......FWIW ~ I've had it out 3 times for shooting practice with about 300+ rounds fired.

Using that drum is my favorite and there's a trick to loading it....click up 3 in.....click up 1 in.......click up 3 in.......and so on. Wallew posted this and it works.

Best rule of thumb that I go by, as well as all my shootin' buddies, is to load half of your mags one month, then rotate them out to the other half the next month. This keeps the springs fresh longer. Nothing worse than a fail to feed to during a critical time when you need it. Don't take chances.

Some say to just not load them 100% to capacity, but 90% is just as bad IMHO (no offense intended to those that do, I just choose not to).

Best case: You get to fondle your ammo.
Worst case: You get to buy more mags.

.02

And no, not a stupid question, you would be suprised how many people dont even think about this, it took me along time to learn this as well.

Dog, great question. I've thought about it before too.

Yeah, I picked up 20 clips for $7.99 off Centerfire when I ordered extra AK mags......

http://www.centerfiresystems.com/ind...ROD&ProdID=127

FWIW - I load up some of my mags 50% which puts 20 rnds in a 40-rnd mag.

NO...storage alone will not appreciably weaken the spring. This concern has been floating around the gun world for decades. It might have mattered due to poorer quality steel used in springs at one point, but not with today's quality springs, IMO.

It has been proven now that magazine USE eventually weakens springs...you know: compression, release, compression, release...

Soldiers have discovered Vietnam era 30-round mags that have been fully loaded for 30 years and still function just fine.

I DO recommend loading mags with one or two LESS rounds, cuz that last round or two you squeeze in the mag is sometimes under excessive tension and might cause a first-round jam.

And mags do wear out...stockpile plenty...say, 10 per rifle or handgun.

Yup, even though we approach it differently, the end result is the same:
IF IN DOUBT, BUY MORE MAGS.

I try to keep 20+ mags for every firearm I own that takes them...

I keep about 1/2 of them for each fully loaded...

Usually, I cycle them a few times a year... I'll I take them out to the range to practice and to swap'em out for fresher ones...

Then I have other mags that get used as often as possible...
